Linguistic DiversityLanguage Distribution and linguistic diversity in the region, Roots:
The romance language, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, etc. are spoken throughout mainland and western Europe. With the exception of Greece, the countries on the baltic landmass speak Southern Slavic languages, such as Macedonian, Serbo-Croatian, Bulgarian, and the Albanian languages. Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese are all descendants of Latin. The Serbo-Croatian, Bulgarian and Macedonian languages all derive from the South Slavic offshoot of the Balto-Slavic language. Greek and the Albanian languages are in their own categories and have no intermediate descendants. The common ancestor of all of these languages was the Proto-Indo-European language spoken by Europeans and Indians in prehistoric times (4500-2500BC). |
